From the very beginning it was a Dream...a dream of freedom, adventure, history and maybe even wealth. It all began over 20 years ago, in the remote Palmer River goldfield of Far North Queensland, Australia.
And it went something like this... |
| |
June 1988...
… a young man alone with his new detector studies a smooth, white, pyramid-shaped rock. A glint atop it catches his eye.
“It’s GOLD…. GOLD!” he shouts, laughing out loud. But only the ghosts of the Palmer River share his jubilation. |
| |
| ‘We’ve got another one’ they chuckle, ‘the Fever’s got him, good and proper’...and the man wanders off across the gully, waving that magic wand, dreaming of the future and treasures beyond his wildest imaginings… |

| |
Five years later, Jonathan Porter decided to turn his passion into his livelihood and since then, he and his wife Frieda have travelled extensively throughout the goldfields of Australia, finding thousands of nuggets along the way and passing on advice to the many new chums encountered in
The Great Outback. |
| |
In 1996, Jonathan became involved in evaluating prototype metal detectors for Minelab Electronics, developing an intimate knowledge of the ‘new generation’ PI detectors from the SD 2000 to the current GPX Series .
He is also a regular contributor to The Australian Gold, Gem & Treasure magazine and has had numerous articles published in the US Journal ICMJ. |

| |
Not ones to do anything by halves, in 1999 Jonathan and Frieda celebrated the arrival of twin boys and after a short spell at home, packed the whole show up again to 'head bush', travelling around Australia each year for the prospecting season. Josh & Tim have spent more time clambering over spinifex and through mulga scrub than they have in 'civilization' and were nearly three before they discovered a how to use
a light switch! |
| |
| During 2004, Jonathan commenced the fulfillment of another dream, filming and producing a series of instructional DVDs on the Minelab series of PI detectors, now distributed in the US, Europe and a dealer network throughout Australia. |
| |
In early 2006 and working with US Minelab dealer Chris Gholson, he filmed and edited two instructional DVDs released in June that year.
| |
Continuing as the leading authority on the practical use of Minelab PI Detectors, JP has released a further two instructional DVDs (both approx 220 minutes duration), 'The GPX Factor' on the GPX4000 (May 2007)
and three months after the GPX4500 was released, his fourth DVD '
The SETA Project'. (July 2008)

In July 2011 after a 3 year break, JP has released the long-awaited DVD on the GPX5000 'Unwrapping the GPX5000' - over 3 hours of
in-depth field demonstrations and exclusive interviews with key Minelab PD staff Bruce Candy and Phil Beck and with a personal endorsement by Peter Charlesworth (Minelab GM), this fifth DVD cements Jonathan's postion as one of the world's leading authorities on Minelab PI detectors.
During this break his cinematic and editing skills have been honed to the point where content produced by him was included in a recent screening aired at the ATSE Clunies Ross Awards in Brisbane where he was a personal inviteee of Bruce Candy, the well deserved recipient of this prestigious award. It was a moment of immense pride and satisfaction as Mr Candy publically acknowledged Jonathan's long involvement in the product development process of Minelab's metal detecting technology (as well as describing him as a 'larrikin prospector' in the presence of the Governor General!) and one which will remain the highlight of his detecting career.

**'The Outback Prospector' Series are the only instructional DVDs
on Minelab PI detectors to be fully endorsed
by Minelab/Codan and Bruce Candy.**

BEHIND THE SCENES
| |
Jonathan maintains control over the entire production, from concept to capturing the footage using the latest HD Digital Video camera in the field through to the intensive editing process in his custom fit 'man-cave' as well as overseeing graphic design, manufacturing and distribution, supplying a network of retailers throughout Australia, the US and UK.
‘Unwrapping the GPX 5000' was filmed using three high end digital video cameras shooting entirely in Hi-Definition video then edited on a very powerful dedicated DV editing computer using Intel Dual Xeon CPUs utilising a total of 24 Threads with 12 GB of DDR3 ECC Reg RAM. Video files are stored on a special Raid10 HDD system that is fast enough to allow many layers of the very large video files to be played back and edited in real time. This is all done to ensure the best possible quality image and audio package is provided to the customer to ensure the viewing experience is as real to life as possible. |
| |
| |
Combined with his extensive experience over the last 23 years (18 of these as a Professional Prospector), Jonathan has applied his passion for detecting with his technical knowledge based on
an involvement with Minelab, evaluating prototype detectors since 1996, to produce innovative and informative productions depicting Electronic Prospecting, our favourite pastime (and in our case, livelihood) in an exhilarating yet responsible manner it deserves. |
